It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our friend and fellow Rotarian, Trudy Lang-Flumerfelt, who passed away May 19th while returning home to Ontario. We are grateful that she was surrounded by love during her final moments.

Many of us have been thinking about Trudy often over these past months as she courageously faced significant health challenges. Even through difficult times, Trudy remained an example of grace, kindness, resilience, and service to others.

Trudy was a proud and dedicated member of the Rotary Club of North Bay for many years. She embodied the spirit of Rotary through her commitment to fellowship, community involvement, and service above self. Whether helping organize club events, supporting Rotary4Kids initiatives, welcoming new members, or simply offering encouragement and friendship to those around her, Trudy made our club stronger and more compassionate.

Beyond Rotary, Trudy was deeply connected to the Northern Ontario community and was widely respected for her support of education, local organizations, and charitable causes. She carried herself with warmth and generosity, always making people feel valued and included. Her impact reached far beyond any single project or committee; it lived in the relationships she built and the lives she touched.

One of the most beautiful things about Trudy was her extraordinary passion for music, especially the piano. Music was not simply a hobby for her; it was something that lived deep within her soul. No matter where she travelled, even in the furthest corners of the world, Trudy seemed able to find a piano and bring it to life with her talent and joy.

One story that perfectly captures her spirit came during her treatments in Florida. George asked if Trudy might be allowed to play the piano in the hospital lobby, and cautious permission was granted. Before long, Trudy was filling that lobby with music for everyone passing through. She did not play for recognition or attention, but because music was part of who she was. In a place often filled with fear, uncertainty, and exhaustion, she brought warmth, beauty, comfort, and humanity to complete strangers simply through the gift of music.

We will also deeply miss hearing Trudy’s beautiful piano during our Rotary meetings. Her music brought so much joy, laughter, and energy into the room. Whether it was a familiar tune or one of the wonderfully wild songs with lyrics she somehow convinced all of us to sing along to, Trudy had a remarkable ability to bring people together and lift spirits. Those moments were never just entertainment, they were expressions of her heart, her humour, and her desire to inspire others through music and fellowship.

As we reflect on Trudy’s life, we remember not only her accomplishments, but also her smile, her humour, her welcoming spirit, and the genuine care she showed for others. She leaves behind a legacy of quiet leadership, compassion, artistry, and meaningful service that will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the Rotary Club of North Bay, we extend our heartfelt condolences to George, Jillian, Russell, and the entire Lang-Flumerfelt family. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Trudy will be deeply missed by all of us.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Rotary Club of North Bay. Our club will ensure these donations are used in ways that truly honour Trudy, her kind spirit, her love for children, her deep commitment to music, and our community.
