PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
President Natalie MacDougall

Basic Education and Literacy Month.

The Board of Directors met on September 15, 2016 in Brett’s boardroom, where Don Coutts shared a proposal for a new fundraiser called Catch the Ace which was briefly discussed at the last Club Council.  The fundraiser has been successful in Eastern Canada (under the name Chase the Ace of Spades) and could generate significant income for the club and support for community projects.  It does require substantial resources (both in terms of space and people) but could have very beneficial results for us in terms of increasing our profile in the community, providing a hands-on project for members and friends to be engaged in, and benefit our community.  While the board supports the submitting of the proposal, there are a number of issues which need to be addressed before we can move forward with this fundraiser.  With that, Don Coutts is seeking members to participate on a committee which will explore various logistical issues associated with the proposal.  If you are interested in being part of this exciting new Rotary project, please contact Don at donald.coutts@sympatico.ca or 705-494-6128 - by September 30th.

The regular meetings scheduled for October 17th and 24 are being cancelled to facilitate your participation in the upcoming Polio Plus dinner on October 14th at the Davedi Club (between 11:30 and 13:00 - $30 per ticket) along with the 3-Club Wine and Cheese Mixer at Cecil's Map Room, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per ticket person.
President Natalie was pleased to welcome new Rotarian, Justin Rancourt to the club, along with his sponsor Past President Brett Tucker.
PROGRAM

Livia Huwyler, Rotary Exchange Student

Hello and welcome to my presentation about my home country Switzerland.

First a few things which are famous in Switzerland that you may know already - Roger Federer a famous Tennis player from Switzerland he is born in the near of Basel where I live; the Matterhorn a famous mountain; Swiss chocolate (and I have some samples for after my talk); Fondue is a Swiss food specialty; the Swiss game called Jassen. (Kelly and her family can play it already); Swiss watches; Swiss pocket knife; and the Alphorn often played in the mountain regions.

Switzerland is in Europe and is a little country. The neighbour countries are Austria, Italy, France, Germany and Lichtenstein. They also have Swiss money and not Euros like the others. Switzerland is made up of different cantons/regions. We have 26 cantons and every canton has its own dialect and emblem. I live in Riehen that’s near from Basel-city. Bern is our capital city.
