Welcome to our second meeting of Membership and New Club Development Month.
This past weekend, the Rotaract club held their annual Lightly Loved Literature sale at the North Bay mall.
For your information, our club is working with the Rotaract club to develop a mentoring program – it will be a great opportunity to get to know these young leaders better and for us to learn from one another. On the topic of “mentoring”, Nicholas Waltenbury (our former short term exchange student to France) has advised me that he is working with Mayor Al MacDonald to implement a mentoring program for young professionals in the community (aged 15 to 35) – some of you may be contacted to become mentors.
The board met virtually (by teleconference) on Friday, August 12, 2016 to finalize the admin budget along with the charitable trust account. Those documents will be available on club runner for your review/interest. The directors will be communicating directly with their chairs to confirm their budgets for this year.
Michelle was born in Espanola and lived between Timmins and North Bay, before moving to Callander 30 years ago. In describing her family's heritage she said they are French, English, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, German, Algonquin from Temiskaming and Northern Ontario - making her a "Heinz 75 mutt" - but all round Canadian. Michelle attended West Ferris, where she took up dancing (tap, jazz, ballet) and loved to read and write. Her post-secondary education included office admin., General Arts & Science and 1 year of biotechnology. Michelle started working at the early age of 12 for her dad who had his own mining and exploration company, before a stint as a telemarketer (age 14). Her present position is Sales Consultant at Chartwell Barclay House in North Bay., where she is the primary point of contact for seniors and/or their families when they consider retirement living. Michelle is also involved community outreach to employers/employees and groups to educate individuals about retirement living, the differences between the levels of care, the process and also about 'care-giver stress'.
Her common-law and business partner of 6 years is Patrick Despins. Their business promotes information on personal, professional and leadership development; and also a marketing a financial fitness program. They have 3 children - Taylor (22), Michael (20), Chloe (18) and 2 stepsons - Brayden (17) and Ethan (14).
Michelle was asked why she joined Rotary. She said the values that Rotary subscribes to are "a good match with mine". She enjoys the people and the atmosphere and has not formally belong to a service club and the timing was right. Michelle is looking forward to the opportunity to participate in fundraising at all levels; and to grow and learn.
