A total of 34 Rotarians and family members (Canada, United States, and Grand Cayman) took part in this year’s Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) tour, along with 9 staff from the Cooperative for Education (CoEd), from February 6-16, 2015.

The tour included visits to 13 different schools – 10 participating in the Textbook Program, 2 with the Culture of Reading Program and one with a Computer Centre.

One of the highlights for the North Bay club this year was the decision to become a textbook sponsor for a new school to the program – Chumanzana, with a total enrollment of 68 students.

There was also a visit to one other school to meet with Scholarship Students and potential candidates. The club currently sponsors 1 student, while 4 members are also sponsoring students on their own.

The GLP is a ‘self-sustaining’ initiative between Rotary International clubs and CoEd (non-profit organization) to provide badly-needed textbooks, computer labs, scholarships, literacy and training programs to underprivileged children in Guatemala.

The Project has been supported by over 430 Rotary Clubs. To see a list of these clubs, click here. To see a list of individual Rotarians leading the project, click here

Since 1998, the GLP's programs have been brought to over 300 impoverished rural communities. There are over 23,000 students using textbooks at 164 schools. The GLP has also founded 39 self-funding computer centers and 40 primary reading programs. The project is working with the goal of ensuring that no child in Guatemala grows up without the gift of both traditional and technological literacy.
